Digital Television Project
in System Design Group 

In the last year there has been a revolution in television broadcasting in the UK, with the introduction of Digital. System Design Group at BBC Research and Development is proud to have been a key contributor to the launch of these services.

The Group's responsibilities have included:-
  • system design and technical architecture
  • setting up and operating the DTT pilot broadcasts, 1996-1998
  • testing and system integration for delivery of operational services on all platforms
  • determining coding parameters
  • developing new features such as digital text, improved subtitles and automated collation of programme schedules for on-screen display of electronic programme guides (EPGs)
  • participation in industry-wide bodies and standards organisations (TDN, DTG, DVB)
  • technical co-operation with BSkyB, ONdigital, the cable companies and the BBC's equipment suppliers and contractors
  • assistance to digital receiver and set-top box manufacturers.
