My-eDirector 2012 is a three-year collaborative project, funded under the EU's Framework 7 programme, which is developing a system to generate personalised coverage of large events such as the Olympics. It will allow consumers to choose which people, or events, they wish to follow within real-time broadcast scenes, and automatically offer them the most appropriate camera view and related statistics. For example, a viewer might be shown an interesting long-jump during a long-distance athletics race.
A key part of the My-eDirector 2012 project is the research and development of new technologies for person identification and tracking. Unlike typical existing systems, the project is targeting large-scale, multi-actor, multi-target environments and high-activity scenes, and is taking into account the complications that arise within an outside broadcast environment.

This R&D project aims to provide a unique interactive broadcasting service. Click Find out more here.
Both image-based and tag-based technologies are being addressed; in particular BBC R&D is investigating the possible use of RF-based real time location systems and GPS-based tracking for sports and other production use.
The tracking information will be used in the generation of rules for user-driven selection of cameras plus tailored streaming based on in-built profiling mechanisms. Ultimately, this will lead to the development of personalised broadcasting services over a variety of channels and networks, provide possibilities for new forms of user experience and offer novel revenue generating services for broadcasters and content providers.
