HDTV Production technology

The HDTV Production Technology project offers technical advice to the BBC regarding HD cameras and displays and works with manufacturers and standards bodies to ensure consistency in HD technology.

Even though the BBC HD channel is now well-established, there is still the need for ongoing work on HD production technology. One particularly important area of research is that of flat panel displays for production. HD flat panel displays are critical to the production of HDTV of the highest picture quality, now that CRT displays are no longer available, but display performance can vary greatly between different monitors. In collaboration with the EBU Production Technology Group, we are currently working on tackling the problem of how best to measure and specify display performance.

This project also tests production codecs, standards converters and various other items of production equipment. The project holds reference HDTV content and test material dating back to the early 1990s and has recently added uncompressed 1080p50 content for the future evolution of HDTV production.

We will continue to ensure that the BBC has world-beating HDTV production and delivery services. We will also ensure that the picture quality of our HDTV output remains consistent while at the same time making certain that we are best placed to exploit technological advances – and cost or bandwidth savings – within the programme production chain.
