Dr Marta Mrak (Dipl. Ing. and MSc EE, University of Zagreb, Croatia; PhD, Queen Mary University of London, UK) is a Lead R&D Engineer at BBC R&D where she leads research projects on video compression fundamentals and new content experiences. Before joining the BBC in 2010 to contribute the H.265/HEVC standardisation, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Surrey and at Queen Mary University of London. In 2002 she was awarded a German DAAD scholarship for video compression research at Heinrich Hertz Institute, Berlin, Germany.
Marta has been involved in several projects funded by EC, EPSRC and InnovateUK, and she is coordinating Horizon 2020 Innovation Action COGNITUS, while also acting as a supervisor in Marie Curie ITN ProVision. She is senior IEEE member,as well as elected member of IEEE Signal Processing Society technical committee on Multimedia Signal Processing, and of IEEE Circuits and Systems Society technical committee on Multimedia Systems and Applications.
She published more than 100 journal and conference papers, book chapters, including co‐editing of two books. She co-authored a paper on H.265/HEVC verification and evaluation methodology, which received IEEE CSVT Transactions Best Paper Award in 2017. In 2014 the papers she co-authored received recognitions at IBC 2014 "Best of IBC 2014" and IEEE ICIP “Top 10% papers”, as well “Top 10% Paper Award” at IEEE MMSP workshop 2014. In 2013 Marta received IEEE ICME “Quality Reviewer Award” and IEEE MMSP 2013 workshop “Top 10% Paper Award”.
In 2017 and 2016 she was area chair for IEEE VCIP, while in 2015 she was area chair at IEEE ICIP. In 2008 she organised and co-chaired the IET event on "Scalable Coded Media beyond Compression". She organised several special sessions on selected topics involving multimedia processing, including “Enabling convergence of new forms of media” at IEEE MMSP 2017, “PROVISION - Perceptually Optimised Video Compression” at IWSSIP 2015, "Advances in Transforms for Video Coding" at IEEE ICIP 2011, "Advances in coding for distributed camera networks" at ACM/IEEE ICDSC 2009 and "Networked Audiovisual Systems" at ELMAR 2008. She was guest co-editor for Special issue on “Advances in High Dynamic Range Video Research”(Elsevier Journal of Signal Processing: Image Communication, February 2014), Special issue on "Advances in image and video processing techniques" (Springer Journal on Multimedia Tools and Applications, 2010) and Special issue on "Scalable coded media beyond compression" (Elsevier Journal of Signal Processing: Image Communication, July 2009). She is also acting as an area editor of Signal Processing Image Communication journal.
