Our Technology Transfer function makes BBC R&D technology advances available to the BBC in a usable form. This might mean building bespoke solutions or merely connecting people together to define and solve problems. It also commonly involves working with industry and academia to turn R&D ideas in to the types of products and services that we can actually use.

We are responsible for licensing BBC R&D’s designs, patents and other intellectual property to industry. Licensing our innovation generates value for both the BBC and the licensee. It helps speed up the time it takes for products to be developed and of course means we have the technology we need to deliver new experiences or to deliver current services more efficiently.
Although we tend, initially, to focus on the BBC’s technology requirements we also seek to transfer technology to other parts of the media, technology and creative industries—it is not just the BBC that benefits from BBC R&D’s innovations.
Current transfer projects include:
* DVB-T2

DVB-T2 is the technical name for the technology that will drive next generation Freeview. We have licensed transmitter and receiver technologies which will ultimately enable more HD services on Freeview.
* Ingex

Ingex is a system used for tapeless studio recording based on cheap commodity PC hardware, created by BBC R&D and used on shows such as EastEnders and Dragon's Den. The Tech Transfer Team is working with a network of suppliers and partners to ensure that we can provide the best service to productions inside and outside the BBC. For more information, see Ingex's own site.
* On-Channel Repeaters

We have been working with a number of external companies to licence our unique "on-channel repeater" technology which can boost a radio or TV signal to a local area without causing interference with the original signal.
* Patent and IP Licensing

The Tech Transfer team also manage the BBC's portfolio of patents and intellectual property created over the last 20 years, dating back to BBC Designs department and the previous incarnations of BBC R&D, as well as new technology created by our researchers. This includes a wide range of speaker and microphone equipment, modulators and coding equipment for broadcast transmission and production use, subtitling tools, aspect ratio converters, video processing software such as shot change detectors, virtual production tools and much more. See our licensing page for more details on our intellectual property portfolio.
