Josie D'Arby: Shopping on a budget means watching every penny, so I've got ten pounds to spend - I'll be looking for bargains but I'll also be keeping close tabs on how much I've spent. Let's see how I get on.
I'm having a few friends over tonight. I've got things in the cupboard but I need a few extra bits. Well these are £1.09 each but you can get two for £1.60, so I'm only paying 80 pence each for them, which is a saving of 29 pence a bottle. That sounds good to me. Ah, now these have got a third off, but these are half price so that's a much bigger saving. Pretty similar fruit, I'll go for the oranges.
Now this has only got 20% off and it's already far too expensive a cut of meat for me, so I can get beef for much cheaper than that. The cheapest I can get it here, well it is £3 for this but you can two of these for a fiver. That, I think, is the better bargain.
So I think I'm up to about £7 so far. Always nice to have a bit of bread with a meal when you've got friends coming round, so what's the best bargain I can get here? Well, we've got no special offers on. Oh hang on, this is a good bargain: "Buy any 5 for £1.19" but quite typically, they've sold out of that. I'll have to go for the next cheapest option which is a nice brown loaf, 69p. No discount there, but you can't get a discount on everything.
So how much is in my basket so far? For the meat I've got £5, for the drinks I've got £1.60, that's £6.60. The oranges are a pound, that's £7.60 and it's just about 70p for the bread. £7.60 plus 70p is £8.40? Is it? No, it's £8.30. Okay, so I've got £1.70 left to spend.
Some butter for the bread I think is what I'll spend that on. Ah, right, I've got £1.70 left, and my favourite brand of butter is £2.65, so I could either go for a smaller packet and see if I can get it on budget, ah which I can, for my £1.70 'cause it's £1.39.
Now look at this: I bought these two bottles for £1.60 earlier and I thought I'd got a bit of a bargain, but I can get much more drink for my money than that. This huge bottle, which has got more than these two put together, is just £1.45 so I'm getting more drink and I'm saving another 15 pence. Problem is I've got to bring these back.
I reckon I've got 49p left and these crisps are 48 - get in! Perfect. I should have a couple of pence change. Hello, those for me. I've been trying to get it under £10. I think I've done it, I think it might be something like £9.99. There's a tiny bit of a chance I might have gone over, but I think I'm bang on.
Shop assistant: That'll be £10 and one penny, please.
Josie D'Arby: And a penny?! Man, I was sure it was going to be £10. £10 and a penny, well, it's only a penny over. I can still be quite pleased with myself. Thanks very much, there you go, and there's you're penny.
Shop assistant: Thank you
Josie D'Arby: Thank you very much, that's great. Well that wasn't that bad - £10 and one penny. I'm quite pleased with myself. Need a bit of practice though.
