11 and a half million pounds and some enlightened thinking later – Birkenhead Park – the UK’s first council-funded public park - has been restored to its former glory and updated for the 21st century. New York’s Central Park was modelled on it and after years of neglect it’s recently been awarded both a Green Flag Award and a Green Heritage Award.
