Festive fines

People face fines for being drunk in a pub.

Now here’s a sobering thought in the midst of the party season - revellers who over-indulge in the festive spirit could find themselves facing an £80 fine. Under a little known regulation in the 2003 Licensing Act, it is an offence to be drunk in a pub or indeed to serve anyone who’s intoxicated.What’s more, the Home Office recently awarded £250,000 to police forces around the country to pay for stricter enforcement of these laws over Christmas and New Year.  Amongst other things, the cash will pay for the provision of plain-clothes officers to keep an eye on pub-goers and landlords to make sure they obey the rules. Now though John Hemming, the MP for Yardley in Birmingham is leading a rebellion, and a few days ago he went on a pub crawl with a difference. Adrian Goldberg received an invite.
