When is a Pinot noir not a Pinot noir?

Over several years, E&J Gallo bought millions of pounds worth of wine from French suppliers believing it was prestigious Pinot noir, when in fact it was from the lesser grapes Shiraz and Merlot, a French court in Carcassonne in South West France has found. The court has handed down fines over the affair, one of the biggest scandals to have hit the French vineyards in years.
