Concerns about increased vetting of people in contact with children
Children's sports clubs up and down the country are voicing concerns following a piece of government legislation which is due to come into force next year. The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act will identify and ban dangerous individuals from working with children, their names kept on a central data base for all to see to ensure they don't get jobs. Children, says the government, will be safer. But sports clubs says volunteers with only minimal contact with children are also having to go through Criminal Record checks and then be constantly monitored. Its bureaucratic, confrontational and demeaning they argue and want none of it. As a result it's feared many will stop helping children in clubs and groups, forcing many to close. Richard Wells has been investigating.
