Nipping down to the ‘offie’ when people turn up unexpectedly is something we’ve come to take for granted. But the number of off-licences in the UK has shrunk dramatically over the 20 years. So we’ve gone from five and a half thousand in 1988 to two and a half thousand this year. About half of those belong to First Quench Retailing, it owns Threshers, the Local, Wine Rack, Bottom Ups, Victoria Wine and Haddows. As you may know it called in the administrators last week.
