 Listen to You and Yours

COMING UP ON YOU & YOURS
Next week we’ll be talking technology with the President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Lord Alec Broers, who’s giving this year’s Reith lectures. It’s part of a special series which will include a survey of your views and a vote on the most significant technological innovation of the last two hundred years. If you have any questions or comments you would like to put to Lord Broers on the growth of technology and its implications for us as consumers get in touch.

Give us your views on either topic by calling us on 0800 044 044 or emailing us
Please leave contact details so we can get back to you.

TODAY: Time poverty - are our personal relationships suffering because of it? Italian pension crisis – what can we learn? And how you can buy to let a 4 star hotel.

ITALIAN PENSIONS
Pension reform is one of the biggest challenges facing governments across the EU. Nowhere is the situation more acute than in Italy, where increased longevity and a dramatic drop in the birth rate has created an ageing population - supported by a shrinking workforce. Italy’s generous welfare system is in crisis and Italians are being asked to worker longer to plug the gap. The BBC’s Rome correspondent, Frances Kennedy reports on the Italian reaction.

NOTTINGHAM UNIVERSITY
Nottingham University is going international. This September it’s opening a new campus in the city of Ningbo, ZheGiang province, China, 3 hours along the coast from Shanghai. The cost is put at £40 million. It is hoped around 4,000 Chinese students will enrol over the next four years. At the end of students will have a degree just as if they’d gone to the East Midlands campus. Philip Dalling from Nottingham University explains why they are setting up overseas.

WHEELCHAIR TRAINING
Mastering the use of a wheelchair isn’t easy and often requires guidance and practice. But the Association of Wheelchair Children says that many young people are missing out as NHS services don’t tell them how to get the most out of their chair. The charity is running its own courses to help disabled youngsters become as mobile and independent as possible. Fiona Clampin went along to one of their courses in Torquay to see the training in action.

BUY TO LET HOTELS
How does this sound? One room in London 4 star hotel, double bed en-suite bathroom, Corby trouser press, mini bar, fine views, and yours for £235’000. Clearly more than the cost of a week’s board, it’s actually an investment opportunity, where you not only have a luxury hotel room at your disposal, but you also stand to make up to 7% annually on your initial outlay. Johnny Sanderson, the man behind the scheme and Robert Barnard from hotel consultants PKF explains how it works.

TIME POVERTY - RELATIONSHIPS
Continuing our series looking at the concept of time poverty today we ask what effect our modern lifestyles are having on our relationships with our nearest and dearest. Do we now have less time for people and does that mean fewer close relationships? Sarah Woolman asks what the modern phenomenon of “speed dating” says about our attitudes to love. And divorce lawyer Vanessa Lloyd-Platt, Vicki Shotbolt of National Family and Parenting Institute and Nick Lezard, The Guardian’s ‘Slack Dad’ columnist discuss whether a lack of time has brought a poverty to our relationships.

TOWN TWINNING
Town twinning was set up to foster good relations between Britain and other European cities, especially in France and Germany. Bristol now has seven twins around the world – including Bordeaux, Porto, and towns in China, Mozambique and Nicaragua. So what does the city get from it all? Angela Robson went on an all expenses paid junket – to Bristol – to find out.
