 Listen to You and Yours

COMING UP ON YOU & YOURS
Next week we’ll be talking technology with the President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Lord Alec Broers, who’s giving this year’s Reith lectures. It’s part of a special series which will include a survey of your views and a vote on the most significant technological innovation of the last two hundred years. If you have any questions or comments you would like to put to Lord Broers on the growth of technology and its implications for us as consumers get in touch.

Give us your views on either topic by calling us on 0800 044 044 or emailing us

TODAY: Restaurant portions – are our eyes too big for our stomachs? The Swiss authorities’ plans to crack down on “ suicide tourism”. And the massive Meccano memorabilia sale.

PORTIONS
A poll of 1000 catering staff shows that nearly three quarters of them believe their customers are getting greedier and fatter – and demanding bigger portions than they used to. Mark Lewis the managing editor of Caterer and Hotelkeeper magazine, which ran the poll tells us what they found.

DIGNITAS
Switzerland is planning a crack down on so called “suicide tourists” – terminally ill people who travel from all over the world to make use of its voluntary euthanasia clinics.             A proposed new law would mean will need to have lived in Switzerland for at least 6 months in order to be eligible for assisted suicide. Lesley Close whose brother John died at the Dignitas Clinic last year, Jacob Greber, the Zurich Correspondent for Swiss International Radio and Rachael Hurst the Director of Disability Awareness in Action discuss the implications.

ROBERT DYAS
Robert Dyas hardware shops, scattered throughout the south of England, seem to have a special place in the hearts of DIY fanatics. They’ve seen steadily increasing sales over the last few years despite a deteminedly low-key approach to self promotion. This week a new chief executive takes over with ambitious plans to double the number of stores to around 150. But will its traditional values be compromised? Sarah Pennells reports.

NEWS UPDATE
Simon Thompson gives updates on stories covered recently on You and Yours. The Bank of Scotland apologises for financing a deal to buy 45 pornographic magazine titles from publisher Richard Desmond. Waitrose buys 19 stores from Morrisons to establish a foothold in the North of England and the latest in the ongoing saga of Coca Cola’s ill-fated foray into the bottled water market.

HEALTHY FOOD
How healthy are the healthy eating products on supermarket shelves? Labels such as Fat Reduced, Lo- Fat, Lo-cal and reduced Salt don’t always tell the full story. Reduced fat can mean that a great deal of extra sugar or salt has been added to compensate. Philippa Budgen runs the rule over three supposedly healthy foods with Catherine Collins, chief dietician at St George’s Hospital in south London. And John Wood the Director of Food Legislation at the Food & Drink Federation, Dr Barbara Stewart-Knox of the Northern Ireland Centre for Diet & Health and Annie Seeley a nutritionist with the Food Commission discuss whether consumers are having the wool pulled over their eyes.

MECCANO
Millions of youngsters used Meccano’s metal model-making kits to build cars, planes and bridges. But the kits weren’t the only products for which the company was famous. Hornby trains and Dinky toys were also part of its range. Now a quarter of a century after its factory closed one of the biggest collections of Meccano memorabilia is about to be auctioned.
Jon Douglas reports.
