Friday 01 December: Sue had been the very model of a successful, professional person. Well educated and highly cultured, she was an opera singer – performing in places like Glyndebourne and Paris and working with the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company. But after a gambling debt proved the last straw, she took to living on the streets. We first met Sue when she arrived at the night shelter for the homeless attached to St Martin in the Fields church in Trafalgar Square, whose work is supported by donations from Radio 4 listeners. Because of their help, these days she has a roof over her head, although Sue’s life even now is still far from untroubled...
