Report information

Mac continues to traverse the full extent of his non-musth range, which we know about from past observations. He's doing this as a series of north-south sweeps. This week he followed the Timbavati River southward, returning from Kruger National Park to the southern part of the private nature reserves.

As the dry season progresses grasses are becoming increasingly moribund, losing most of the nutritional value in their above ground parts. Many tree species are also starting to drop their leaves. This change tends to occur earlier in areas where soil moisture levels are relatively low. Along the rivers and drainage lines plants typically retain green material for longer. Breeding herds are increasingly attracted to these areas, where they are better able to meet their relatively high nutritional needs. If Mac is searching for these herds it makes sense that he focuses a disproportionate amount of time in the rivers and valleys.

Best wishes,
Steve
