I Capture The Castle (1948) by Dodie Smith
Dosie Smith
17-year-old Cassandra lives in a crumbling castle with her beautiful sister, Rose, their eccentric father and artisitic stepmother.

Cassandra practices her skills as a writer as she chronicles the story of how the two girls search for and find love - but without a fairytale ending.

I only discovered this book last year after a film version had been made of it. I think it is a brilliant book and has one of the best opening lines ever.

I first read this book when, aged about 12, I took it away with me on a weekend visit to a schoolfriend. I was so engrossed in the magical writing that my friend ended up reading the book over my shoulder....I'm delighted to see, via Woman's Hour, that she still loves it too!

I always thought that 'I Capture the Castle' was my own private secret. I read it when I was about 14 and it had a major effect on my thinking. I loved the dotty family and badly wanted to be inside the book.

I must have read this book hundreds of times - and even now I turn the pages with anticipation. I must also confess to having dreamt of an emerald engagement ring like Rose's since I was about 13! At the age of 22, I got one!!

I've read this book for the first time at the age of 11 i thought it was a fantastic book and i recomend people to read it

I've just read this book for the first time at the age of 60! I can't believe I've lived this long without knowing about it. It's beautifully written, touching and very funny. A completely convincing portrait of a young girl on the brink of womanhood with everything before her.I'm so glad I discovered it at last.

Alix Vlasto
I have been re-reading this book every 10 years or so for the last 40 years. It continues to be a treat to read, and I'm relieved to say that the film was excellently cast, and more or less faithful to the book.

Alice Cairns
Oh the agony of being young! Top read, and better when you come back to it as a grown up.

I first read this when I was about 15. A very evocative story as as seen through the awakening eyes of Cassandra. A book which I re read when needing a comfort book.

I've only just read this book about two or three months ago. At first I thought i'de never get into it but now I have I really love it and recommend it to every one. It's an excellent book and gives you an excellent insight to the life of Cassandra Mortmain.

Barbara Jones
I first read this book when I was about 12 or 13. The memory of the impact the book had on me has floated in and out of my mind for the last fifty years and reminded me of the variety of ways that lives can be lived and that there is always the possibilty of change.
