Ground breaking cases
December 29th is the 30th anniversary of the Sex Discrimination Act, which was meant to revolutionise women’s lives and bring about a new era of gender equality.
Jenni speaks to two women who brought ground breaking cases under the act, Belinda Price and Tess Gill.
In 1977 Belinda Price won a case against the Civil Service challenging an age limit of 28 for entry as an executive officer. She claimed that fewer women than men could comply with the age limit since many women in their twenties were out of the labour market having children.
In 1981 Tess Gill brought a now famous case against El Vinos Wine bar when she and a friend were refused service at the bar because they were women.
