Women of the Year: Dame Jean Else 29 Dec 2005
The suspended headteacher on her year

Dame Jean Else was for many years acclaimed for her work in turning around Whalley Range High School – a school which on her arrival in 1994 was exposed as having the worst attendance record in the country and which ten years later had more than doubled its pupil figures and was celebrating its best ever exam results.

But 2004 ended with her suspension from the school of which she had been the headteacher for a decade.

She talks to Jenni about 2005 which has seen her face a critical Audit Commission report and which ends with her still waiting for the conclusion of a disciplinary procedure by Manchester City Council.
