The sense of smell 13 Dec 2005
How it influences our choices

This is the time of year when sales of perfumes go through the roof and you can only hope you'll be bought a scent that actually suits you.  Women's sense of smell is said to be particularly acute and we are profoundly influenced by it.

Dr Anne Richardson analyses smells for washing-up liquids, floor cleaners, deodorants and shampoos and looks at the psychology behind different odours. The right smell, she believes, can make us think one product performs better than another. She spoke to Rachel Ellison.
