The story of the man's village and family is woven into the complex pattern. But the art is in danger of dying out.
Fewer men are going to sea, women rarely have time to knit and hi-tech modern clothing has overtaken the home made woolie.
But the patterns are being collected together in Whitby on the north east coast, to make sure they don't become lost forever - and they are being made available to knitters everywhere.
