  Uganda's abducted children 22 February 2005
returning home

A ceasefire announced by Uganda's government to ease the passage of peace talks with the country's rebels is set to end today. But there are hopes that it will be extended. The 19-year-old rebel war in Northern Uganda continues to have a lasting effect on the lives of the country's people.

More than one and a half million men, women and children have been made homeless and tens of thousands of children have been abducted by the Lords resistance army. The boys became soldiers and some of the girls, often as young as 12, were forced to marry elite officers in the rebel army. A number of them have escaped or been freed by their captors.

Christine Otieno met some of them when she visited the northern town of Gulu.
