  Milk Banks 28 December 2004
how breast milk banks can help premature babies

It is widely known that breast milk is much better for babies than formula milk, but it is particularly important for premature babies.

Breast milk contains vital anti-bodies that help them fight infection. Unfortunately, it is fairly common for women to have problems producing milk after a traumatic early birth.

The solution is donor breast milk. Some hospitals around the country have milk banks which supply breast milk to babies whose own mothers are unable to provide it.

Woman's Hour is joined by Gillian Weaver, Chair of the United Kingdom Association for Milk Banking, and Fiona Fahy, mother and regular donor of breast milk.
