launching the UN International Year of Microcredit
A Zambian woman made history this week when she opened the markets at the London Stock Exchange and marked the launch of the UN International Year of Microcredit.
Forty seven year old Alice Jere was chosen for the role because of her achievements as an entrepreneur in her homeland Zambia.
Thanks to an initial loan of the equivalent of twenty English pounds, Alice has gone from rearing fifty chicks to running her own poultry business employing several members of staff.
Martha meets Alice and Irene Mutalima, who runs the organisation which gave Alice her initial loan.
