  Sanjida O'Connell 26 November 2004
on her new book, Sugar

Sugar has been described as a medicine, a necessity, a drug, but its tale is one of both life and death.

Humans are all dependent on sugar for life - glucose is the fuel that drives us but our lust for sugar has contributed to the death of millions, the creation of the slave trade, the rise and fall of multinational corporations and obesity in the western world.

Martha talks to Sanjida O'Connell whose new book Sugar is a history of the plant which once grew as a type of grass in New Guinea.
