  Elizabeth Gaskell's house 18 November 2004
Elizabeth Gaskell's house at 84 Plymouth Grove
restoring the Victorian author's home

Elizabeth Gaskell bought 84 Plymouth Grove after the publication of her first book. Virtually unchanged since Elizabeth Gaskell's day, it's been bought by the Manchester Historic Buildings Trust but is in need of over £2 million of restoration work.

Judy Merry, one of few people allowed access to the site, reports on the project.  She's joined by architectural historian, Claire Hartwell and Janet Allen from the Gaskell Society.
