Wilkie Collins' haunting Victorian thriller becomes a musical

Adapting a well-loved book for television or stage is always a risky venture. Turning one into a musical is even more fraught. Andrew Lloyd Webber's latest production is based on the The Woman in White , the Victorian novel by Wilkie Collins.

Sonia Friedman, producer of the new musical discusses with Martha how the classic thriller has been adapted for the modern stage.

Catherine Peters, author of a  Wilkie Collins' biography, The King of Inventors  and novelist, A L Kennedy join Martha and Sonia to explore how the author used his novels to highlight the problems of women in Victorian society.

The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins is available in paperback from most bookshops

The King of Inventors: Life of Wilkie Collins by Catherine Peters is published by Secker & Warburg, ISBN 0436367122

The new Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, The Woman in White, is at the Palace Theatre in London from 15 September
