Eating disorders and shoplifting 26 July 2004
One story behind retail crime

3% of young women in the UK suffer from the eating disorder bulimia nervosa, although experts believe the true figure is likely to be much higher.

A quarter to a third of bulimics routinely shoplift as part of their illness.

What are the urges that drive women to steal and how should they be dealt with by the legal system? A young woman tells her story and then Jenni talks to Dr Jill Wellbourne, patron of the Eating Disorders Association and Lucy Russell, Director of Smart Justice.
