Most famous for the classic Ice Cold in Alex, Syms stars in this week’s Woman's Hour drama.

Sylvia Syms’ big break came playing the plucky blonde opposite John Mills and Anthony Quayle in one of the great British war movies, Ice Cold in Alex

But she also became known for her roles in some of the more groundbreaking films of the 60s including The Victim with Dirk Bogarde, in which she plays the wife of a gay man.

But now, even with some 50 years of acting behind her, including many TV and theatre roles, she prefers to call herself 'A hard-working actress, not a star.’

This week she plays Violet Van Der Elst in the Woman’s Hour drama, The Invincible Violet.

The Invincible Violet is on Radio 4 Monday 26 July until Friday 30 July at 10.45am
Her recital, Mothers and Daughters, is on 1 August at the South Shropshire Arts Festival
