Stella Chiweshe Monday 16 September 2002
Stella Chiweshe is one of the leading players of the mbira, also known as the thumb piano.

Until independence in Zimbabwe the instrument was banned by the authorities and playing it was punishable by prison.
Stella joins Jenni to talk about her role playing the mbira during forbidden traditional festivals and how she has became the inspiration for so many female musicians in Zimbabwe today.
Stella Chiweshe is playing at The Spitz, 109 Commercial Street, Old Spitalfields Market, London E1 on 17th September. Box Office: 020 7392 9032
