Maria Montessori Monday 29 April 2002
Maria Montessori was born in Italy in 1870. She became the first woman there to qualify as a doctor and through her work in medicine became interested in mental illness and especially in children.

It was through this work that she developed a system of education which was named after her and there are now Montessori schools all over the world.
Next week is the fiftieth anniversary of her death. Jenni talks to Lynn Lawrence, director of training in the UK.
