The FANYs were formed in 1907 by a man who fought with Kitchener in the Sudan. He envisaged a corps of Florence Nightingale type nurses who could fight, and the all volunteer First Aid Nursing Yeomanry was formed.
The FANYs, who still have part civilian and part military status, come into their own during wartime or a national emergency. Since WW2 the corps has been chiefly known for its work in the field of civil and military communications, and are the only remaining all female British military unit.
Martha Kearney meets the woman who heads the FANYs today, Corps Commander Lynda Rose, and asks how their role has changed nearly a century on from their formation.
