Abortion ban in Nicaragua 14 Jan 2009
What effect has the ban had?

It’s now just over two years since Nicaragua’s parliament introduced a blanket ban on abortion, making it a crime for a woman to end a pregnancy or have what is called a therapeutic abortion, carried out when a woman’s life is in danger. There are no exceptions, even victims of rape and incest. For the anti-abortion lobby in this Catholic country, the ban has been a cause for celebration but opponents of the law say it has already resulted in the deaths of scores of young women. Vera Frankl reports from Nicaragua and meets one of the families affected.
