History
Mrs Sheila Borrett 28 Jul 2008
First woman announcer on the BBC

It's 75 years today since Mrs Sheila Borrett appeared on the BBC as the first woman national radio announcer. However, her appointment was to be shortlived. Countless complaints, mainly from women listeners, saw her tenure in front of the microphone cut short. She was axed after only three months. Jane is joined by BBC historian Kate Murphy to discover more about Sheila Borrett and the early women who broadcast on the BBC.
