Hundreds of mothers gathered this weekend in cities across France to breastfeed their babies and simultaneously make a stand against the taboo on nursing in public.
“The Big Breastfeed” is part of an international campaign organised by UNICEF and the world Health Organisation to promote breastfeeding as a newborn's best defence against diarrhoea and respiratory infection.
The campaign follows the “breastfeeding welcome” initiative which sees shops, restaurants and other business across Wales putting stickers in the window to identify welcoming places for nursing mothers.
There is also a growing chain of drop-in centres known as “baby cafes” which are specifically aimed at women who are breastfeeding. The first ‘Baby Café’ was set up in Haywards Heath in Sussex to give women a place where they could feel comfortable breastfeeding. Now more of the cafes are springing up across the country.
Lizz Pearson went to a Baby Café to meet parents and breastfeeding specialists who came up with the idea. |
