The celebrated black woman singer
The American singer ‘Sister’ Rosetta Tharpe, first made her name in the 1920s singing gospel music. She took her name from her preacher husband, but when Decca Records signed her in the 1930s the tension between the sacred and the secular threatened her popularity with her church-going fans. She was often torn between her gospel roots and the allure and influence of the blues. In our series, reporter Judi Herman hears from Gill and Gary Atkinson, the husband and wife team behind Document Records, who celebrate these iconic black women singers in compilations of their work.
