Disease-free babies? – New embryo screening
A universal MOT or genetic test for embryos that can screen for almost any inherited disease could be offered to prospective IVF parents within a year. The technique, known as karyomapping, is due to enter trials and promises to help families affected by inherited illnesses such as cystic fibrosis and spinal muscular atrophy. Controversially, it could in theory also be used to select an embryo with a particular eye colour, or with genes that affect height. Jane is joined by Charlotte Bancroft, a Genetic Counsellor. |
