Women of the Qur'an 29th April 2009
Islamic tile

Khawla, whose story is told in the section of the Qur'an 'She who Pleaded', is the only character in the Qur'an, aside from Mary, in whose name a whole chapter is dedicated.  It is the account of a woman who, in turmoil over her husband's decision to divorce her, pleads with the Prophet Mohammed for him to intervene.  Angela Robson speaks to Shuruq Naguib, Lecturer in Islamic Studies at Lancaster University.
