Lieder are short songs, accompanied by a piano and usually sung in German – at just three to four minutes in length they were the pop songs of the nineteenth century. They were performed in the home and as a result, were one of the few forms of musical composition open to women. As the Leeds Lieder festival gets underway we are joined by the mezzo soprano Marianne Vidal, who performs live, and by Jane Anthony, founder of the Festival and by the musicologist Dr Sophie Fuller.
The Leeds Lieder+ Festival runs 12-14 October at venues across Leeds.
