Induced Labour 12 Nov 2008
Giving birth after 42 weeks gestation

Standard practice in this country has been for medics to induce labour if gestation goes beyond 41 weeks. At the moment, around 20% of babies delivered on the NHS are born this way. But is this figure too high? Independent midwives tend to avoid inducing labour unless it’s absolutely necessary and so only 2-3% of babies delivered independently are induced. So should we be more prepared to just let nature take its course? Jane discusses the issues with Dr Dagni Rajasingham of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and Independent Midwife Brenda van der Kooy.
