Cord Blood Collection for Stem Cells – Do the risks outweigh the benefits ?

Is it a good idea to collect the stem cells from the blood inside the umbilical cord? Some NHS hospitals currently allow it to take place on the labour ward and it’s now also possible to pay for a cord blood collection service through private companies. But just how strong an insurance policy does it represent in trying to protect your child’s future health? Dr Andrew Weeks, Clinical Lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Liverpool Women’s Hospital and Joanna Tilley, Scientific Director for Virgin Health Bank, join Sheila to discuss the risks and benefits of Cord Blood Banking.
