The problems of workaholism in Britain’s long hours culture are well documented but until recently scant attention has been paid to how a loved one’s addiction to their work can also deeply effect their partner. A new catchphrase has now reopened the workaholism debate. So called ‘married single mothers’ refers to the growing number of women bringing up children whilst married to high flying career men who live in the office and only ever return home literally to sleep. Such women claim that, unlike their own mothers, not only do they end up taking on housework and childcare, but many also hold down jobs, balance the finances and even do the DIY. Gina Gardiner and Sathnam Sanghera, who both describe themselves as recovering workaholics, join Jenni to discuss the cost to family and couple relationships when a partner’s work becomes all consuming.
