Norwegian Boardrooms 11 Jan 2008
Boardroom
2008 is the deadline for public companies to have 40% women on the board

Norway now boasts the highest number of women on the boards of its public companies in the world. This is mostly due to a law which requires that 40% of women must have been appointed to public boards by January 2008. But with reports of companies scrabbling to appoint the “golden skirt” to fulfil their quotas by the deadline, can the best candidates be appointed in this way and would it work in the UK? Jane speaks to Professor Jorunn Okland, from the University of Oslo and Sigrun Vageng of NHO, The Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise.
