When the local baker in the Cumbrian town of Alston retired five years ago Meryl Baker and her friends decided they didn’t want to lose the home baked flavour from their shopping bags and decided to take the matter into their own hands. They founded 'The Moody Baker', a cooperative. It now has 14 members, 11 of them women, who run the shop, make bread, cakes and savouries, and sell at farmers' markets. Caz Graham went to meet them. |
