Food
Apples 3 October 2006
It's harvest time for apple growers - but it can still be difficult to find some of the old varieties of English apple. All the romantic sounding ones like Early Victoria, Cockpit Improved and Reverend Wilks are disappearing from our shops.

When Tango Fawcett married a farmer and moved into his family farm near Tadcaster she found she was mistress of her very own ancient orchard. It hadn't been nurtured for years, so she has revived it and now the apple trees are enjoying a new lease of life, as is the mulberry tree which is several hundred years old.

Lesley Hilton went to meet her.
