Sondheim's Women 29 August 2006
Over the last four decades, the lyricist and composer Stephen Sondheim has earned a reputation for using musical theatre to tackle difficult subjects with an unconventional and uncompromising approach. His characters are complex and troubled and he's won special admiration for his ability to create rounded women and place them centre stage.

In the last in our series on Sondheim's women, Judi Herman spoke to musical theatre experts and some of Sondheim's favourite leading ladies to find out more about the influences behind his most interesting characters.
