In the past, French was the only modern language taught in schools, with perhaps German or Spanish. Now a number of schools are offering a far more eclectic selection, with Mandarin and Arabic on the curriculum. So, is it time to move away from Europe as our first choice of language subjects at school and embrace instead those of a changing world order?

We also hear from Blackheath High School in South East London, where Mandarin has been taught since last year.
