It is estimated that every year in China at least one million women attempt suicide with around 150,000 of them succeeding - that's one every four minutes. According to the World Health Organisation, China is one of the few countries where more women kill themselves than men.
As a new series about China begins on BBC2, Jenni hears about a project that is attempting to prevent suicide in rural communities and is joined by Elisabeth Croll, Professor of Chinese Anthropology at SOAS and the journalist Linda Tsang to discuss why so many young Chinese women are taking their own lives.
