Caring for victims
Sexual Assault Referral Centres are a key part of the Government's policy for caring for the victims of rape and sexual assault. The idea behind the centres is that rape victims should be able to have a forensic examination and receive medical screening, treatment and counselling on the same site. Improving the care of victims and the quality of evidence are the priorities and victims are supported through the criminal justice system. So how do the new centres work, how have things improved and are rape conviction rates the big test? Jane visits the Haven in Whitechapel East London, meeting staff and officers from the Metropolitan Police Sapphire team for rape and sexual assault.
