Forbidden Families 5 Aug 2008
Women denied their families by the march of history

Most families in history have been so engaged in surviving that they haven't left written evidence of their lives. In a new series for Radio 4, “Forbidden Families”, historian and author Bettany Hughes has found rare insights into three different families struggling to stay together during tumultuous times. From the writings of an 8th Century Frankish noblewoman to her son who had been forcibly taken from her, to the letters of a loving wife of an MP left to defend the family home under siege from Royalists during the Civil War, Bettany explains to Jenni how she unearthed these moving stories.

“Forbidden Families” is a three part series from Wednesday 6th August at 11am on Radio 4
