Carmen - her enduring appeal 1 Aug 2007
Tsakane Valentine Maswanganyi as Carmen - photograph by Alistair Muir
Who was this feisty, but tragic heroine?

From book, to opera, to film - the story of Carmen has continued to be popular, since her creation in 1845. But what is her attraction to writers, film-makers and directors? A new production of Carmen Jones is on at the Southbank Centre, Matthew Bourne's The Car Man is coming to the end of its run at Sadler's Wells and there is a new English National Opera production of Bizet's Carmen from September 29 2007. Jane's joined by the writer and broadcaster Muriel Zhaga and Jude Kelly, artistic director of the Southbank Centre.
